Statistics on the number of new builds published by the Minister for Housing Simon Coveney have been described as ‘fake news’.

The concerns have been raised by economist Stephen Kinsella, a columnist with this newspaper, after the publication of the latest Census statistics.

Some 33,436 of the people who responded to the Census said they were living in homes completed between 2011 and April 2016.
