Coveney slams calls for border poll as ‘hugely unhelpful’

The minister, who has previously said he would like to see a united Ireland in his political lifetime, now believes that calls for reunification in the context of Brexit are not helpful

Tánaiste Simon Coveney has said calls for a border poll are “hugely unhelpful”, and create more tension at a time when the focus should be on Brexit and restoring power-sharing in the North.

Coveney made the remarks in response to Sinn Féin’s recent calls for preparations for a border poll to be ramped up in the event of Britain crashing out of the EU without a withdrawal agreement next March.
