Councillors resign in droves amid complaints over pay

Councillors have warned that their job is becoming dominated by the “self-employed, the unemployed and the retired” as new figures show that over 100 have quit in the last four years.

The scale of departures had not been previously known, as councillors prepare for next year’s local elections in May.

But the Association of Irish Local Government, which represents councillors, said that 104 councillors in total had stepped down since the 2014 local elections.
