Councillors resign in droves amid complaints over pay

Minister of State for Local Government John Paul Phelan has set up a review of the pay and expenses for councillors

Councillors have warned that their job is becoming dominated by the “self-employed, the unemployed and the retired” as new figures show that over 100 have quit in the last four years.

The scale of departures had not been previously known, as councillors prepare for next year’s local elections in May.
