The rise of ‘maverick’ political figures shows that people still want something authentic and true

The popularity of Donald Trump and Jeremy Corbyn, hugely different though they are from each other, has provoked much commentary of late.

Some see it as a worrying lurch toward the simplistically populist, while others view it as a refreshing antidote to the weary equivocation of their mainstream rivals. Whatever the reasons, the sound of authentic voices proclaiming their very different versions of ‘truth’ is resonating powerfully with many disillusioned citizens.
