Today’s budget will aim to spread what little money is available to as many people as possible and will do very little electorally for any of the parties involved in it.

It is a budget for the very strange political times we live in.

As the minority government struggles to define itself as anything other than one that kicks most controversial issues down the road, this budget will be about keeping the show on the road. It will avoid a general election, but it won’t, as Michael Noonan said recently, have us “throwing our hats in the air”.
