Feargal Quinn: Can Varadkar strike while the iron is hot?

Throughout Europe, workers in essential services are limited in the strike measures they can take. It remains to be seen if Varadkar has the courage to follow through on his proposals for their Irish equivalents

In a poorly timed announcement which coincided with the convening of talks on a new public service pay deal, Leo Varadkar pledged to introduce legislation which will prevent workers in essential services from striking.

Though much of the detail of Varadkar’s proposal has not been spelled out, his proposal is not too distant from the proposal which I set out in the Critical Utilities (Security of Supply) Bill which I published in 2013.
