Apprenticeship system to get shake-up

Plasterers are to be trained in two years instead of four as part of a major shake-up of the apprenticeship system.

There are plans to have 1,000 paid apprenticeships for trainee truck-drivers, as well as new apprenticeships for travel agents, retail staff and chefs.

The government is aiming to boost the number of apprenticeships available and to boost their status, which has always suffered in comparison to third level courses.
