With the wonderful performance of Irish women in the Hockey World Cup, it’s time to celebrate how emerging nationalist Ireland embraced the right of women to participate in sport

What is it about sport that, for many people - not all, I might add - it can get to places in our affections that few other things can reach? For many it’s a lifelong love affair, a place of renewal and consolation they return to time and again.
