Water charges farce sends us back to 1977

A reckless election promise by Fianna Fáil means that 90 per cent of households will pay nothing for water

The scrapping of water charges is one of the most blatant acts of political vandalism in decades.

It is now the 40th anniversary of the infamous 1977 general election, when Fianna Fáil got back into government by promising to scrap domestic rates and motor tax. That left councils starved of funding for decades – and contributed in no small part to their inability to spend enough money to fund the water infrastructure.
