By intervening in the border debate, the Taoiseach has sent out the clear message that Ireland will not be sleep-walked into an EU/Britain deal that would damage Irish interests

The intervention on the border issue by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has certainly set the cat among the pigeons. In the immediate aftermath, there were flurries of telephone calls from London, Belfast and Brussels, seeking information from Dublin as to what was behind it. It followed on from Foreign Minister Simon Coveney’s declaration that Ireland would simply not accept a border. Joe McHugh, the Government’s man in Donegal, also chimed in with the observation that all the technological devices in the world could not turn a border into something acceptable. All three senior government figures were on the same page, any border is anathema to the Irish Government.
