The Christmas break will allow all sides to draw breath and draw up their plans for the ‘mother of all battles’ over the eighth amendment

There was a lone man standing outside Leinster House in the dark and cold. Inside the Houses of the Oireachtas, momentous votes were being passed by the members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution. The man was holding up a small home-made poster in his hands that said ‘abortion is murder’. As people came out through the gates, he repeated the words for their benefit, in case they couldn’t see, or didn’t look at his poster. Meanwhile the committee at work was live to see – online and on RTÉ/Oireachtas television, with regular progress updates on Twitter and other media outlets.
