Airline pilots bear a huge responsibility, routinely face stresses many of us couldn’t handle, and often fly in a state of exhaustion as they hop between continents

We’ll call him Peter. Now retired, he was a senior airline pilot with a big international carrier and he flew all across the world. He’s been a close friend of mine for years. It’s interesting that I still feel the need to protect his identity like this, but pilots are always careful about what they say in public. With good reason. They are the frontline in an industry that is permanently under scrutiny and their relationships with management are eternally fractious.
