The respect for Liam Cosgrave across most of the political spectrum was clear in the hour of Dáil tributes last week

Liam Cosgrave will be best remembered for taking over as taoiseach during a period of intense political turmoil. His remarkable longevity meant that the only TD in the current Dáil who had actually ever served with him was the former taoiseach Enda Kenny.
