Sky-high building costs dragging economy down

The low-productivity construction sector undermines the open economy – the government must stop signing cheques and start getting tough

The morale-sapping effect of the cost escalation of the National Children’s Hospital from €450 million (which was an early figure,when planning was lodged, the estimated cost was €650 million) to as much as €2 billion requires a response from government. Simply signing more cheques and issuing more press releases praising “world-class” projects irrespective of cost is not good enough.
