Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, while tomorrow marks the 90th anniversary of the Irish equivalent – the opening of the Shannon hydroelectric scheme at Ardnacrusha in Co Clare.

Ardnacrusha may not have quite the same ring to it as Apollo. But 40 years before the space programme, the idea that the fledgling, impoverished Irish Free State could build the largest hydroelectric scheme in the world seemed like something out of science fiction.
