The Mary Poppins tale of women in power is a dusty old narrative, writes Susan O'Keeffe

Wearing rubber gloves, clearing the rooms of cigar smoke and performing nanny duties is how some people have recently been describing the emergence of women on the world’s political stage. And the ‘some people’ I’m talking about are women! And they mean to suggest simply put, that women politicians who are aspiring to, or have already achieved leadership status, are merely intent on cleaning up while the boys take a much-needed break.
