New initiatives and generic brands have reduced medicine costs for the state, but more needs to be done to improve patients’ access to new treatments

According to Atul Gawande, professor in the department of health policy and management at Harvard School of Public Health, our ever-changing world of modern medicine challenges us with 13,000 diseases, 6,000 drugs and 4,000 surgical procedures. The rapidly evolving world of medicine plays a crucial part in helping us fight sickness and disease. That is why we, as a society, should pay close attention to the approach our government, and the HSE, is taking towards newly developed, high-tech medicines.
