Slipping standards after the 2008 crash have allowed this vital tool of state to descend into a free-for-all for anyone with an axe to grind

Has the great financial crash done more damage to our politics than to our economy? Historians in due course will proffer their conclusions. At this remove, it is agreed that the economy has bounced back more quickly and more strongly than was forecast. However, the fragmentation of our politics has plunged the country into an uncertainty that is in danger of becoming accepted as normal.
