Contrary to the headlines, there was no celebrity massacre in 2016. Perhaps our New Year’s resolution should be to gain some perspective and stop treating the deaths of people we’ve never met as personal tragedies

We have to stop obsessing over dead people in 2017. Seriously, we had quite enough of it in 2016. I recognise that there was intense provocation last year, what with the deaths of David Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali et al, and then – on Christmas Day – poor old George Michael. It was sad, no question about that. Nobody wants to see their idols swept away prematurely.
