The collapse of the criminal case against Sean FitzPatrick, the former chief executive and chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, raises profoundly uncomfortable questions – from the state’s capacity to investigate white-collar crime to the role of the Director of Public Prosecutions, to the continued existence of the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement.
