The greatest achievement of the Irish people, wrote the poet Thomas Davis, is their music. It was “the first faculty of the Irish, and scarcely anything has such power for good over them”. Music was used to retain Irish identity during times of oppression and to express individual feelings of injustice, and social issues such as immigration and of deprivation throughout the ages.
