Most voters never even consider the major crises looming over the EU, but base their votes on their attitude to political parties at home

In two weeks’ time, the European Union will move into perhaps its most difficult political space ever. Its 374 million citizens will elect a new parliament of 751 members (705 after Brexit) that, for the first time ever, will contain a significant anti-European populist constituency.

The numbers may be close to 100. It is anticipated that, out of Hungary, Slovakia, Sweden, Poland, Austria, Germany, Italy and France, a new generation of Trump-like right-wing populists will arrive in Brussels....
