Michael D must stick to his word on presidency

From the start of his presidential election campaign, Michael D Higgins vowed to stand for just one term of seven years

If Michael D Higgins decides to stand for a second term of office as president, he will be breaking his word to the Irish people. At the outset of the 2011 presidential election campaign, Higgins repeatedly pledged to stand for one term of seven years. Of course, politicians make U-turns all the time. It is the nature of politics. But this is not what we expected of Higgins, a man we regard as above politics.
