The French president's drop in approval ratings after his charm offensive towards his US counterpart is a lesson for Ireland, writes Ray Bassett

The over-the-top reception given by the new boy on the block, President Emmanuel Macron, to Donald Trump must have shocked the pro-EU liberal establishment in Ireland. There had been much relief in those quarters when Macron managed to sneak through a crowded field of EU sceptics in the French election and claim a surprise victory. He was the only candidate openly supportive of the “more Europe” concept. Here was the poster boy of the European Union and an antidote to the blues created by Brexit.
