Apple’s decision not to go ahead with its data centre is a major blow to the area – and a landmark industrial failure that should be investigated

The decision by Apple not to proceed with a big data centre in the Co Galway town of Athenry is a blow to the expectations of local people. It is also a blow to the IDA strategy to expand modern-day industrialisation to the rural regions of the country. Instead of facilitating Apple in establishing an exemplar regional development project at Athenry, we have inflicted an act of industrial self-harm.
