Build-to-rent investors aren’t crowding owner-occupiers out of the market: the truth is much more nuanced than that, writes Ken MacDonald
There is a significant shortage of new apartments under construction in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. In Dublin alone, there is a requirement for 9,000 units each year for the sale and rental markets. Yet there were only 1,766 apartments built in 2018, and fewer than 3,000 will be built this year. This is mainly as a result of the non-viability of apartment development and a number of associated issues.
