The government needs this dispute like a hole in the head, but it had better not make the same mistakes it made with the Garda pay debacle

A mid-winter confrontation with striking nurses is a government’s nightmare. There are bigger challenges to struggle with, like the chaos threatened by a disorderly British departure from the EU. Or the runaway horse that is the National Children’s Hospital rip-off of the taxpayer. But politically, an enduring nurses’ pay dispute can inflict more short-term electoral damage on a government.
