This despicable crime has been relegated to the bottom rung, writes Susan O'Keeffe

When the body of a tiny baby was found recently at a recycling plant in Wicklow, An Garda Siochana (AGS) came forward very quickly and asked the baby’s mother to get in touch. Listening to them on radio, I was struck by the effort being made by the garda spokesperson to use kinder, warmer, more human language. It may have been somewhat stilted, but the term ‘mum’ was used a number of times. In later broadcasts, someone remembered to include ‘dad’ in the appeal.
