Firing threat for civil servants still a wheeze

The government has unveiled a new plan to renew and reform the civil service. We cannot have a return to the mistakes of the benchmarking era.

Last week, the public expenditure and reform minister Brendan Howlin and the Taoiseach Enda Kenny unveiled a new plan to renew and reform the civil service. While there are several laudable elements to the plan, most of the headlines focussed on the notion that it would in future be easier to fire underperforming civil servants.
