Castro’s single greatest achievement was that he, and Cuba, refused to bend in the face of a 50-year onslaught from the most powerful country on earth

All this weekend, the Fidel Castro debate has raged, for and against. It is only to be expected. Castro is a gigantic historical figure, an icon and uniquely important because he represented the singular and most significant challenge to Western society’s 20th century’s implicit faith in democratic capitalism as the panacea for ordering our affairs.
