The public had lost confidence in Nóirín O’Sullivan. In the best interest of the force, it was time for her to go
The position of the Garda Commissioner had been untenable for some time. It was untenable when it was announced that a commission of investigation was to examine whether she, or others, played a part in the smear campaign against Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe. It was untenable when details emerged about financial irregularities at the Garda training college in Templemore. It was untenable when it emerged that a letter she sent to the Comptroller and Auditor General on July 31, 2015, in the context of signing off on one the Garda accounts for the previous year, was “inaccurate”.
