The HSE struggles to retain doctors trained here. Meanwhile, competency exams are being waived and doctors working as consultants have not finished specialist training

Imagine lying in an operating theatre awaiting an operation. You would, presumably, expect your consultant anaesthetist and consultant surgeon to have completed specialist training in their respective areas. After all, this is what helps to ensure these doctors are at the top of their field and equipped with the necessary skills.
