The government has suggested regional development is a priority. Let’s hope it goes further than its predecessor's lip service when it came to balanced development outside the capital

When it snows in Dublin 4, in spite of how some think, it’s not inevitably snowing around the country. The last government found this out to their cost when they peddled their hollow ‘Keep the recovery going’ mantra at the last general election. When it comes to the prioritisation of policy issues, it is so often the case that rural Ireland gets left behind. And that’s not just my view – surely it’s official now that just ahead of his election as Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar launched a Catch-up Strategy for the Ireland Left Behind, an initiative which is aimed at accelerating the recovery in rural Ireland.
