In the beginning, there were many who admired Britain for challenging Brussels’ political hegemony. This writer was one.

Many had grown deeply concerned about the EU’s democratic deficit, the insistence on free movement which was unleashing more and more populist anger and the seeming indifference of Brussels to the growing migration crisis.
