I was struck when a financial journalist told me last week of what he called a “visceral hatred” of the banks.
The basis of “visceral” is that it is not intellectual. Rather, it is unreasoning or instinctive. Of course, the danger of this is that, precisely because it is not intelligent, the direction our gut will drive us in is, at best, uncertain.
