Comment: Will Netflix still be rich and relevant in 10 years' time?

Netflix plans to invest $6 billion in content this year, writes Colette Sexton

Hands were rubbed together with glee in the audiovisual sector last week asNetflix announced plans to invest $6 billion in content next year. Think of all the TV shows and films $6 billion could fund - no wonder dollar signs were appearing in producers’ eyes.

Some naysayers say that the streaming giant had a similar budget for content this year and only 10 per cent of that went on original content, with the rest going on licensing, so production companies should not get too excited yet. ButNetflix plans to move to 50 per cent original content over the next few years. This year, it released 600 hours of original content, next year that figure will rise to 1,000 and it is likely to keep increasing year after year.
