Despite scars left by the worst excesses of nationalism, preserving the memory of the Spanish Civil War is vital
Eighty years ago last night, the first shots were fired in the coup d’état that would launch the Spanish Civil War. In turn, that war would mark the first stage in the descent of Europe into conflagration. The coup was known by its leaders as the Alzamiento, or rising.
