Charleton may restore our faith in tribunals

The Charleton tribunal may finally stimulate action on the 2012 Children’s Referendum and the reports of the Garda Inspectorate

Irish people give out about tribunals in the same way we complain about the weather. There is an inevitability about it.

This misses the point. The Charleton tribunal, with its extraordinary powers of compellability, is a unique opportunity to contemporaneously scrutinise how exactly Ireland works. It has the potential to finally implement the much-neglected Children’s Referendum and Garda Inspectorate reports.
