CervicalCheck report fails to provide clarity on a complex issue

Cervical screening is an imperfect science, but the latest HSE report misses an opportunity to close the gap between public understanding and medical reality

The HSE published figures that show which labs analysed the slides at the centre of the CervicalCheck debacle.

These are the slides of 221 women who were diagnosed with cervical cancer or precancer. After the women were diagnosed, CervicalCheck, the national screening programme, retrospectively examined their smear tests to see whether potential cancer markers had been missed. These retrospective audits were carried out to ensure that the screening programme was operating to a high standard.
