After years of financial and political skulduggery, the world, and Ireland, has finally woken up to the need to rein in Russia. Why did it take so long?

On March 4 last, someone attempted to kill two Russian citizens – Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia – in the picturesque British city of Salisbury. Until then Salisbury was probably best known for its historic cathedral and for having one of the best-preserved original copies of the Magna Carta of 1215 on display. The Magna Carta enunciated a number of fundamental principles which we take for granted today in countries which abide by the rule of law.
