If this government goes to the Christmas recess, the advantage moves to the opposition

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, is the first holder of the office in the history of the state to surrender his prerogative to call a general election. Before the budget the privilege is the Taoiseach’s alone. After the budget the leader of the opposition, Micheál Martin, can cause an election at a time of his choosing.
