Budget rigmarole swallows up sugar tax questions

The Government has made no suggestion that the money raised by the new tax will be ring-fenced for children’s health or education

There was definitely no whiskey in the chamber, no wife or partner on show and very little blood on the shiny new blue carpet in Dail Eireann. The annual Budget turned out to be a quiet affair, devoid of all earlier traditions and conducted calmly and briskly by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe – on his first outing in this job.
