Apology let down by loose language
The Taoiseach’s use of the word ‘deceit’ in reference to CervicalCheck angered and upset healthcare staff and threatened to further undermine public understanding of the screening process
Within 24 hours of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar apologising to women and families affected by the CervicalCheck screening debacle, the Irish Times reported that health service staff were dismayed by his use of the word “deceit”.
That’s one way to describe the reaction. Populist, cowardly, disappointing, misinformed and dangerous were the words used by various doctors and senior health service officials after they had dissected Varadkar’s apology.
