The Abbey Theatre’s self-inflicted wounds

The joint chief executives of the Abbey have improved the box office returns at the national theatre, but a little caution and humility might have helped

And so, the Abbey finds itself in turmoil again.

It recently endured an annus horribilis with the exclusion of female theatre-makers from its 2016 cultural programme.

That was an indefensible act that spurred the creation of the Waking the Feminists movement, which attracted support worldwide.

But for the theatre, in 2019, to find itself back in hot water already – well, you could hardly call the situation ideal.
