Work permits backlog ‘hitting ability to attract foreign investment’

2,520 work permits waiting to be processed at the end of December. Business groups say that system needs urgent modernisation.

The backlog in a queue for employment permits for key overseas workers has more than doubled in the space of a year, raising the risk that the issue could undermine Ireland’s capacity to attract foreign investment.

According to figures released to The Sunday Business Post, there were 2,520 work permit applications awaiting processing at the end of December, up from 1,192 at the same stage in 2017.
