The Cabinet has agreed resolutions to be put before the Dáil and Seanad in order to approve the establishment of a Tribunal of Inquiry intoclaims that senior Gardaí conducted a smear campaign against whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

A statement said the terms of reference were “comprehensive and clear” and reflected the will of the Oirteachtas. The tribunal will be chaired by Supreme Court judge Mr Justice Peter Charleton.

The issue has put pressure on the Government and, in particular, on Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who has been criticised for his handling of the affair.
