WhatsApp to appeal after being penalised by Irish regulator over collection of users’ information

The messaging app has already taken legal action on a previous €225m fine from 2021, and is planning to appeal a new €5.5m penalty

WhatsApp has said it will appeal after it was fined €5.5 million by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) in a ruling that found its collection of users’ information was illegal under EU law.

The messaging service, owned by Meta, said it “strongly” believed that its data processing operations were “both technically and legally” compliant, and said it disagreed with the decision announced by the DPC earlier today.
