Demonstrations and Black Friday dampen retailers’ hopes for strong festive sales

Dublin retailers have expressed “extreme disappointment” after trading in the run-up to Christmas was driven sharply downward by a combination of online purchases and water charge protests.

Many outlets in the city centre were dismayed by trading figures compiled last week and the week before as sales increases, where managed, amounted to only a fraction of what is expected at this time of year.
