Virgin Media hits out at ‘fundamentally unfair’ spending code at RTÉ

Commercial broadcaster asked Catherine Martin, the Minister for Media, if she was satisfied with agency’s spending on content ‘already available to consumers elsewhere’ including UK and US box sets

RTÉ’s refusal to differentiate between its spending on commercial and public service broadcasting is “fundamentally unfair”, Virgin Media Television told the government earlier this year.

In a letter released under Freedom of Information, the commercial broadcaster raised questions over the national broadcaster’s spending, and criticised RTÉ’s investment in UK and US box sets, many of which, it said, could already be viewed on other streaming platforms, including Peaky Blinders, and Line of Duty.
