Last night, the Dow Jones index in New York closed above the 19,000 mark for the first time, defying some predictions that stocks would be hit by Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election. The index closed at 19,024, up 0.35 per cent.

The landmark came a day after four of the main US indices closed at record highs for the first time since 1999.
